The summer rainfall that promotes that growth also keeps surface temperatures and humidity high, which can slow decomposition of certain plant materials while accelerating it in others.
Floratam St. Augustine, the dominant grass variety across residential Cape Coral, produces a coarser stem and stolon structure than many other warm-season grasses. That material takes longer to break down, and it accumulates across the growing season faster than most homeowners realize. A thatch layer that measures a half inch is manageable. At three-quarters of an inch or more, it starts to affect how the lawn responds to irrigation, fertilizer, and rainfall.
What Thick Thatch Actually Does
The effects show up in a few ways. Thatch holds moisture at the soil surface, which creates favorable conditions for fungal pathogens. Gray leaf spot and large patch both establish more easily in lawns with significant thatch accumulation because the surface stays humid after the sun goes down. The same moisture retention that keeps the crown area wet also reduces how well irrigation water moves through the thatch into the soil below.
